Sangya Dorje Tamang - Chairman

Venerable Sangya Dorje Tamang is the grandson of the Naena Singh Tamang and the son of the Mr.Buddhi Bahadur Tamang and Maili Tamang from the small village of Phapabari V.D.C ward no.9 Tallo Bhawanchuli of the Makawanpur district. He was born in 1980 to a poor family. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world with more than half of the population currently living below the poverty line of US $1 per day. He was also one of the victims of this poverty line. Because of his poor economic background, he only studied up to class 3 in the simple government school in his village. He then had to leave to do further study and moved to Kathmandu when he was ten years old.

Our life is full of suffering and struggle. Many of us must work for our livelihood. Venerable Sangya Dorje started working as a laborer in a garment factory in Kathmandu at an early age. Then he worked for another 2 years as a servant. Later he worked in a hotel then as a cook in a simple restaurant at Chabahil, KTM. After that he moved to Bouddha where he had the great opportunity to study Buddhism with Venerable Pema Lama Tamang in Tashi Tamang Monastery, Nayabasti, KTM. He then became a monk in Guru Lakhang Monastery in Bouddha.

As a humble monk he now continues to practice compassion through his work in the community, particularly with the children. Through the suffering in his life, he has come to understand the meaning of the Four Noble Truths of Great Lord Buddha.

1. The Truth of Suffering

2. Its Causes

3. Its Cessation

4. Path to Liberation from Suffering

He follows the principle of Buddha, that life and death are the two sides of the same coin and that everybody must die. Knowing this he has dedicated his life to the welfare of all sentient beings. Because he was deprived of education as a child, he does not want to see any child deprived of the light of education. He does not want any child to suffer in the same way that he has because of poverty.

It is estimated that in Nepal, one child in twelve under the age of seventeen is an orphan as result of various causes including AIDs. There is no Government support to look after these children. Venerable Sangya Dorje established NIFON(NYINGMA FOUNDATION OF NEPAL) to provide the support and compassion that is lacking in this area.

NIFON is a non –profit organization registered under the Government of Nepal. For four and a half years, as director, Venerable Sangya Dorje has dedicated his life to help poor children by providing shelter, food, clothing and education. Presently there are 35 children between age of 5 and 16 years at NIFON. They are all from poor families or orphaned. Under NIFON’s care, and with the blessings of Lord Buddha and the help from donors and other generous people, the children are well cared for.

Besides NIFON Venerable Sangya Dorje is also involved in various other activities for the social, economic, cultural and religious development of Nepal. He is particularly active in improving the welfare of the Tamang people and promoting the Tamang language and culture. He is a central member of Nepal Tamang Mother Language Sabhota Script Development Academy for the Development and Preservation of the Mother Language.

He is also president of the Jhayrung Khasur Nepal Tamang Sangha in the Makwanpur district and is dedicated to developing awareness of Buddhism in the local community.

"Educate the illiterate, feed the hungry and cure the sick. This is my way of life and the lesson of humanity ". This is the message to all from Venerable Sangya Dorje Tamang .
